Have you ruled out upgrading?

None of the SHA-2 or TLS-related changes prevent use of self-signed certs. They're far too useful of a tool internally for development to ever want to remove that capability.

It sounds like upgrading to the latest 9.0.1 FP / IF combination will resolve most of your issues, and the documentation has improved subtantially over the last couple of months:
